Artist Statement
As a child, I had a deep love of fairy tales and fables. I often like to deal in metaphor or allegory. If I have one goal in writing anything, it’s that I want to make people believe in magic. The theater is the perfect venue. As a playwright, I believe that the theater is a multifaceted conversation, a series of unfamiliar perspectives, that allow the viewer access into the world of otherness. There is something mystical about the oral tradition.
I believe that writers, in general, have a responsibility to speak for those who do not have a voice. There are deep veins of feminism woven throughout my work and most of my characters belong to the LBGTQ community. Now more than ever, I believe that these voices need to be heard and thought of, not just as voices, but as individuals everyone can relate to. It is the responsibility of art to educate and provoke. I want to ask questions and evoke emotions that surprise us and linger not only in people’s minds but their hearts.
